Origins

The Korean peninsula has been habitable since Neolithic times. The earliest evidence of human settlements is evident in the form of stone-lined cist graves with precious objects like amazonite jewellery being buried alongside the dead. In the first half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognized political state. Of them, Baekje was the most powerful however, its dynasty ended with the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE, leaving Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy thrived for some time.

The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate to expand their territories. Silla, with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters a post-crisis era its development model appears to be in flux. The people who are awed by the costs of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and product markets. On the other hand the people who support the old system attempt to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments and by stoking fears of job loss.

Analysts and academics are divided about the extent to which Korea's evolution is influenced by these two trends. This article assesses developments to date by analyzing five phases of the country's political evolution that include illiberal democracy (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and democratic participation (2002 to the present). This article also identifies key elements that are driving these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% said that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs, and 17% said they did not understand it. This level of disbelief is comparable to that in the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from earlier forms of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea focused primarily on educating students and in bringing Christ to them. In 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event attracted a huge number of professors, church leaders, and scientists.

The success of this event led to the establishment of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The inaugural meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo, and it attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization published its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of film strips and slides from ICR and also some books on creationism that were already published outside of Korea. KACR members also gave talks at universities and churches throughout the country.

A KACR success was observed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so interested in creationism that they raised the money and support to construct a small museum on campus with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branches that conduct seminars and give talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the late 19th century and into the early the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. During this period the famous samulnori, also known as dance-dramas with masks were extremely popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drums as well as different musical instruments.

The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new paradigm of development. The primary challenge for the new regime is to find the right balance between market-oriented and state-led economic policies. It also requires changing incentives, monitoring, or disciplining schemes which have been a part of the system prior the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 and 4.

The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and migrants from northern China. Baekje was one of the major regional powers in the 4th century expanded its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. As a result, it was in frequent confrontation with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders along the border.


The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the development of powerful local factions. Gungye, a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. He also exerted control over part of present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He became an adversary to Goguryeo.

However the rule of his was short-lived. After Gungye was defeated by a powerful local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later, Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the central government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. From that point, the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually grew to become powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
